People often think about surfing or beaches when they think about California, so it is important to explore these aspects of life in California. In fact, surfing has a huge impact on not only the life of Californians, it also influences its language heavily. For instance, the word “dude”, which is commonly used between surfers, is now often used by everyone. Since California has such a large area, there are also regional differences between the North and the South of the state. Northern Californians use the word “hella” as an intensifier and Southern Californians like to use a definite article, “the”, in front of freeway names.
