専門科目紹介：「English Discussion」─Becoming a Discussion Leader─

English Discussion is a course which focuses on current issues that affect everyone. In the course, students often talk about issues that are in the news and how those issues can affect them and the people around them. The main purpose of the course is to have students think critically about current events and lead discussions.
In the beginning of the course, the teacher leads most of the discussions, but students gradually take the lead during the semester. Students become the discussion leaders and lead the in-class discussions. Students are encouraged to ask each other questions during the discussion. This provides ample practice for students to become good at asking questions in any situation.
By the end of the course, students should be able to comfortably talk about current events and lead a discussion on their own.

「English Discussion」の授業では、すべての人に影響を与える時事問題に焦点を当てます。ニュースになっている問題や、それが学生自身や周りの人達にどのような影響を与えるかについて話し合います。この授業の主な目的は、学生に時事問題について批判的に考えさせ、ディスカッションをリードさせることです。
コースの初めのうちは、教員がほとんどのディスカッションをリードしますが、学期が進むにつれて、学生が徐々にリードするようになります。学生がディスカッションリーダになり、クラスでのディスカッションをリードします。ディスカッション中は、お互いに質問しあうように促します。これにより、学生たちはどのような状況でも質問できるよう十分に練習を積むことができます。
コースの終了時には、学生たちは時事問題について気軽に話し、ディスカッションをリードできるようになるでしょう。
