Greetings from the President of Tokyo Seitoku University

Thank you for visiting the website of Tokyo Seitoku University. Our philosophy of establishment is the Japanese word “Seitoku”, which can be translated as “attaining high virtue”. We value the spirit of “virtuous individuals with abilities”, and our mission is to educate our students to become reliable, trustworthy individuals who can contribute in a world where globalization as well as informatization is rapidly spreading. Tokyo Seitoku Gakuen will be celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025, and we have formulated the “TOKYO SEITOKU VISION 100” that will be targeting this very special year. In the 10 years from now until our 100th anniversary, the entire faculty aims to further enrich the quality of our education in order to “develop globally capable individuals possessing the spirit of ’Seitoku’”, and so we would like to ask for your continued understanding, support, and guidance for our institution.
Tokyo Seitoku University President, Kunijiro Arai

Philosophy of Establishment and the Five Academic Goals

Shigeo Sugasawa was the founder of this institution. Sugasawa devoted his studies to Confucianism in his early years and then became an educator. At the age of 27, he was elected as a member of a prefectural assembly and eventually became a member of the Diet. He was also successful as a businessman who was involved in the founding and management of a company. Based on his own experiences, Sugasawa supported the importance of moral education as well as practical studies, therefore the philosophy of establishment was set forth as “developing individuals with high virtues”.
The Third Chairman of our institution, Shirohyoe Kiuchi, simplified this philosophy of establishment by creating five academic goals: We aim at developing “a sense of broad morality”, “high intelligence”, “sound body”, together with “an attitude to value labor” and “courage to act” in order to become a successful member of society.
